On February 12, 2026, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) formally petitioned the African Union to intervene and preserve the fragile peace in northern Ethiopia. In an open letter addressed to the AU Chairperson, the TPLF expressed alarm over the lack of progress in implementing key components of the 2022 Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA). The party cited 'renewed military mobilization' and persistent political exclusion as primary drivers of the current instability. Furthermore, the letter highlighted that thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) are still unable to return to their homes in disputed western territories, a condition that was central to the original truce. The TPLF warned that without credible AU-led mediation and a return to the constitutional order, the risk of a return to armed confrontation in the region remains dangerously high.
