In a decisive move to bolster maritime security, the European Union has extended the mandate of its 'Aspides' naval mission in the Red Sea until February 28, 2027. The announcement, made on Monday, February 23, 2026, follows a strategic review of the operation which was first launched in February 2024 to protect international shipping from Houthi attacks. Member states have allocated €15 million to cover the mission's common costs for the next year. The operation continues to provide defensive protection for vessels transiting the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Gulf of Aden, ensuring the stability of vital trade routes connecting Europe and Asia. Greek Rear Admiral Vasileios Gryparis remains in command of the mission, which is headquartered in Larissa.
