Ethiopia: Türk fears new crisis in Tigray amid renewed fighting - Serwe News
UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk warns of a deepening crisis in Tigray following renewed heavy fighting between the Ethiopian army and regional forces. The escalation involving drones and artillery threatens the region's precarious humanitarian situation and the 2022 Pretoria Agreement.
UN human rights chief Volker Türk appealed to all parties involved in renewed heavy fighting in Ethiopia's Tigray region to step back, warning of a deepening crisis. Clashes between the Ethiopian National Defence Forces (ENDF) and the regional Tigray Security Forces (TSF) intensified in late January and early February near the Amhara border. Türk highlighted reports of drones and artillery being used, causing fresh civilian displacement. The UN expressed concern over the incomplete implementation of the Pretoria Agreement and the presence of Eritrean troops, calling for political dialogue to resolve disagreements and prevent a return to full-blown conflict. High Commissioner Türk emphasized that 'the situation remains highly volatile' and feared further deterioration of human rights conditions in the war-weary north.
