The Ethiopian Media Authority (EMA) has officially revoked the press accreditation and operating license of Reuters News Agency as of February 13, 2026. The decision follows the publication of a high-stakes investigative report by the news outlet which detailed the existence of a clandestine military training facility in the Benishangul-Gumuz Region. According to the investigation, the site was being used to train members of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group currently engaged in a protracted civil war against the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). The report alleged that the training program was facilitated through a strategic partnership between the government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the United Arab Emirates. Ethiopian officials have characterized the report as a 'threat to national security' and 'orchestrated disinformation.' Following the announcement, Reuters staff in Addis Ababa were reportedly given 72 hours to cease all operations and finalize their departure from the country. This move represents one of the most severe escalations in the Ethiopian government’s relationship with international media since the 2020-2022 Tigray conflict.
