At the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union held in mid-February 2026, Eritrea achieved a significant diplomatic milestone by being elected as a Deputy President for the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly while focusing on regional peace and water security.
Represented by a delegation led by Biniam Berhe, Eritrea's Permanent Representative to the African Union, Asmara actively participated in the 39th Ordinary Session of the AU in Addis Ababa. The session, themed around sustainable water and Agenda 2063, culminated in Eritrea being elected to serve as one of the Deputy Presidents for the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly. Domestically, the government in Asmara concluded its annual activity assessments, with the Ministry of Information and the Eritrean Medical Association outlining 2026 action plans aimed at strengthening national health systems and infrastructure. Despite international pressure, the AU session also saw renewed calls for the lifting of unilateral sanctions against Eritrea, signaling a shift in regional diplomatic dynamics.
